Although eggs were a symbol of fertility and rebirth in pagan cultures, Easter eggs were used by early Christians to symbolize parts of the Easter story. Easter eggs represent the empty tomb from which Jesus resurrected. Orthodox Christians would abstain from eggs during Lent. The church would hand out eggs at Easter service with the cracking open of the eggs a joyous symbol of the resurrection.
The Easter egg hunt is from the 16th Century, when Martin Luther would hide eggs for women and children. The joy of the hunt mirrored the happiness and joy the women felt when they found Jesus’ tomb empty and realized Jesus had risen.
Christian missionaries hid Easter eggs painted with biblical scenes for children to find. The children would find the Easter eggs and tell the story associated with the paintings. The eggs were dyed different colors to represent different aspects of the Easter story. Yellow for the resurrection, blue for love, and red to represent the blood of Christ. The rolling of eggs down grassy hills by children began in the 1790s in England as a symbol of the rock being rolled away from the tomb.
