Memorial Day: A remembrance of the bravery and selflessness of all servicemen and women
Originally established after the American Civil War, Memorial Day emerged as a way to honor and remember the fallen soldiers who gave their lives in service to our nation. The holiday was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by General John A. Logan, who was the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.
The initial purpose of Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) was to decorate the graves of the soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags as a gesture of respect and remembrance. It became an occasion for communities to come together and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our freedoms and ideals.
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday to be observed on the last Monday in May. This change allowed for a three-day weekend, giving people the opportunity to reflect, gather with loved ones, and participate in commemorative activities.
