Born, Maewyn Succat, in Roman Britain. Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century using the shamrock to teach the holy trinity. The Irish picked March 17 in the middle of Lent to lift alcohol restrictions for the day.
In 1798, the Irish Rebellion adopted the color green.

and A Big Party

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. City parades and festivals have grown in size since the first Boston parade in 1737 and then New York in 1762. Since 1962, Chicago has colored its river green.
