Valentine’s Day – Ode to Mating Season

The inception of Valentine’s Day is often associated with martyr St. Valentine of the 3rd century and a jail house poem signed Your Valentine. However, during the Middle Ages in France and England, February 14th was known as the beginning of birds’ mating season! English poet Geoffrey Chaucer popularized the coined the day “Saint Valentines Day” in a romantic 1375 poem “where every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.” In the 1840’s, Americans started the mass production of cards with scrap bits of lace and ribbons instead of traditional hand written cards.
